Amazon steals Audible.com away from Apple.

  • Maybe not steal, but it’s a scoop for sure, Audible.com has for a long time been iPod friendly. It’s understood that this is a great vehicle for the Amazon Kindle plans.

The Kindle in its next generation (nick named Spindel) is rumored to also play MP3 files. With it’s WWAN(Wifi) connection, you’ll be able do download text or audio of you’re favorite books, maybe they will even hook in unbox, having the full portable entertainment system!

Apple probably should have bought up Audible.com, and added its catalogue to the already established iTunes audible books section. It’s starting to look like a Amazon – Apple war this year.

Air Ships, Movies on Hold - APPLE take 3?

The Macbook Air started shipping today! Meeting the predicted sale dates.

Apple also announced that the free Apple TV software update enabling movie rentals is not quite finished and will now be available in another week or two.

Delays are nothing new to Apple, but it's better that they launch the update with a solid code release, as the Take 2 Movie rental system needs to be bug free, so Apple can hit the ground running in it's fight to take on Amazon Unbox.

Most iPod users are finding out the the .WMV format needs to be converted to .MP4(h.264) in order to play Unbox movies on thier iPods. Looks like both companies will hopefully end up creating a price war, and heat up the DRM Free issue in the Movie Purchase download arena.

What to do! Find an old episode to watch.

Since the writer strike began, I really didn’t pay much attention, as it gets further into the New Year, I’m starting to understand why the general public is looking for a way to stream television shows of favorite episodes or shows that they hadn’t seen. Why! Because the re-runs on TV are too fresh, just been seen episodes.

I totally understand how people refuse to pay large amounts of money to download from iTunes or Unbox. One would think that if these companies set a monthly fee or a package deal on lets say per 10 episodes, credits lets say. Maybe more people would choose legal downloading over sharing systems.

I’m sure by now everyone’s Tivo needs a break; our wallets are starting to bleed. The TV re-runs are sending us into a coma! Its about time someone thinks that if you can get unlimited TV for a dollar amount with your cable company, maybe there needs to be a section on iTunes or Unbox that allows for controlled fresh content that we could pay a reasonable amount per month. If I watch 3 hours of TV a night on iTunes at approx $2 an hour, I’m looking at $6 a night $42 a week, excuse me… $168 a month (approx). I don’t pay that for cable…

Ok, so if I need a one off episode or movie, I might think about it!

Ipod Classic, Get's strong backing!

Yes, an iPod is an iPod. The classic ipod, with it's 80GB and 160GB models get more or a backlift then a facelift.

A new Sleeker design.

Beautiful, durable, and sleeker than ever, iPod classic now features an anodized aluminum and polished stainless steel enclosure with rounded edges.

I know this feels more like a way that Apple can hawk it's engraving service on it's already popular line of ipods. Its still cool that you can now personalize the large capacity iPod. Maybe mine will say iPod Geek 08!

Probably not!

Mac release Q1 08 stats, where are the iPhones?

When the AAPL – Apple Investors heard the news on the stats released on sales the biggest question was what happen to all the iPhones that Apple reported sold. It seems that AT&T announced that 2 million of the 4 that apple reported as sales where activated on the network. The question is? Did the other 2 million get bought to be unlocked to work on non AT&T Carriers?

Now it’s more likely that a large amount of iPhones are sitting in inventory shelves right now as the estimates are that only 20% of buyers have the intention to unlock the phone. What is worrisome is that the announcement of the 3G iPhone later this year could create a sell off on current iPhone inventory stock.

I guess this is really only a concern to the shareholders! Actually, what this means is that you’ll probably be able to find amazing deals of current iPhone technology later this year as the 3G model starts to ship. Great for the consumer! Not to mention the eBay resellers!

Thin is in! Will Apple set the new laptop trend again?

APPLE AIR - THIN

Apple has be setting design standards with innovative designs for decades, many say that the removal of the floppy drive was initiated by Apples removal of the drive around 1999 when the iBook came out. Over the past few years companies have been scrambling to catch up, let’s look at Dell. This year they have entered into the mass-market chains (Walmart, Best-Buy, Staples, etc.). Their whole campaign and designs are around personalization. Who does that sound like?

Now if you realize that Apple designs are about pushing the envelope (Mind the pun) then Thin is in! With the announcement of the Apple Air, a couple of design standards will need to be re-thought. The Air isn’t just Thin! Light! And about style! What will probably become standard in the next couple of years in all laptop designs; will be the incorporation of a backlit keyboard. Also the removal of the DVD drive to an external resource. It’s also believed that the AIR (Apple naming convention for the wireless components i.e. AIRPORT), is the reason the DVD drive is external, and the move to a large use in Wifi technology is ahead.

Okay, the Apple AIR will probably not sell a huge amount of units in the next few months, but it is attractive as an option for students and business people looking for the compact laptop.

Amazon pre-sales state the AIR will ship around Feb. 1. 2008, and you can already pre-order with them or at the Apple store.

The Ipod is less traveled than ever before.

It seems that more and more people tend to leave their ipod docked into a clock radio (Philis Clock Radio with iPod Dock (AJ300D) or a bookshelf radio with a built in dock (Sony iPod Dock (ICFC1IPWHT)). Why? I guess it’s that it’s the perfect storage device for all you’re media. With the Sync being installed in the new automobiles for 2008 it shows you that the MP3 Player is how the majority of people want to listen to their music collection.

The systems that house the iPod range from low end market to high end with companies like BOSE, an their Sound Dock (43091) for as low as $399 and Harman Kardon Go & Play.

The ipod isn’t just for the inside of jacket pocket anymore!

We will probably see kitchen cabinet radio mounts for the ipod, or maybe a ipod wifi dock that streams to wifi speakers. As you walk into your house you drop your ipod into a wifi cradle, and now can access it anywhere you have your remote speakers.

Putting a DVD onto an Ipod or other Digital Players.

Making a digital copy and watching it on your Ipod or other types of players is fairly simple. What you need is a software package that by-passes the DVDs disc encryption, then takes the VOB files of the movie and converts it to the correct format.

Now bypassing DRM (Digital Rights Management) and Copy Protection on DVD dics may not be legal in your country. If you own the DVD and you are making a copy to play on your device then in some countries this is legal.

Now each digital media player uses a certain type of audio video codecs to encode the file so it’s playable on its video playing software.

Apple Ipod media players use a encoding called a MP4. The MP4 format can be encoded using the MP4 encoding or for the Ipod the H.264 Quicktime video codec with the Apple Audio codec (AAC).

The Zune player uses the WMV (Windows Media) format and uses the WMA(Windows Audio codec) for sound.

Blackberry Video uses the MP4 encoding, Divx 4 encoding, Divx5,6 files are currently not supported.

When you’re looking to convert from DVD to a type of player, it’s important that the software you use goes from VOB to the correct codec types. If a file is coded in the incorrect format, most likely your player will not be able to read the file correctly.

Now each video media player may have a different way of loading the files to the players, both blackberry and zune can be accessed by the different OS file manages as a USB type drive.

The Ipod and Iphones are a different story, these players use Apple’s (Mac) file systems and you’ll need to use a “loading software” (Itunes) to sync the files onto the devices. Fairly easy to do, all you do is import the MP4 file to your Itunes software. Then sync up your device.

The best advice I can give is check your hardware specs, most players play resolutions of 320x240, up to 30 frames per second (fps)

Is it the Apple Time Capsule or a waste of time?

It's really up to you! You might find it a waste of money. It a welcomed idea for me.

Why?

The other day, I was sitting around chatting with a friend about how I wanted to put a large external drive mounted on my electrical panel and hook it up to my wifi router to make it accessible to the laptops in my house. The day after the Macworld keynote speech we sat there and kind of snickered about how the timing of the Time Capsule announcement was so close to our conversation.

Now what makes having a wifi enabled external drive so handy, for one thing, backups! I’ve had a few near misses the last few months with losing a large amount of photos. I guess it’s the things that can’t be replaced that are so important not to lose. So the Time Capsule is here! Its two models allow you to have 500GB or 1000GB available for backing up pictures, movie clips. The things that if you lost you would never be able to replace.

I was also thinking that the time capsule will some day make a great storage option for the apple TV. Both have N wifi wireless and Apple TV now pulls from multiple data sources. This makes the extra storage handy to use as a data stream source.
Even though a data copy software will be needed for the Microsoft OS, I’m still extremely happy about this! The announcement wasn't a WOW! Factor at Macworld this year, but its still a welcome tool for many, many people.

Firefox 2 Features:

For an overview, please see Firefox 2 Features.

Downloading and Installing

System Requirements

Before installing, make sure your computer meets the system requirements.

Downloading Firefox 2

Mozilla provides Firefox 2 for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X in a variety of languages.

Installing Firefox 2

Please note that installing Firefox 2 will overwrite your existing installation of Firefox. You won't lose any of your bookmarks or browsing history, but some of your extensions and other add-ons might not work until updates for them are made available.

Removing Firefox 2

You can remove Firefox 2 through the Control Panel in the Start Menu on Windows, by removing the Firefox application on OS X, or by removing the firefox folder on Linux.

Removing Firefox 2 won't remove your bookmarks, web browsing history, extensions or other add-ons. This data is stored in your profile folder, which is located in one of the following locations depending on your operating system:

Windows VistaUsers\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox
Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
Windows NTWINNT\Profiles\<UserName>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
Windows 98, MEWindows\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
Mac OS X~/Library/Application Support/Firefox
Linux and Unix systems~/.mozilla/firefox

Any version of Firefox that you install after removing Firefox 2 will continue to use the data from this profile folder.

Extensions and Themes

Extensions installed under Firefox 1.5 may be incompatible and/or require updates to work with Firefox 2. Please report any issues to the maintainer of the extension. When you install Firefox 2 all of your Extensions and Themes will be disabled until Firefox 2 determines that either a) they are compatible with the Firefox 2 release or b) there are newer versions available that are compatible.

Known Issues

This list covers some of the known problems with Firefox 2. Please read this before reporting any new bugs.

All Systems

  • Some firewall software may silently block Firefox from running. This often happens immediately after Firefox has been installed or updated from a previous version. There are configuration instructions available for most popular firewall programs to help you ensure that Firefox is allowed to connect to the Internet.

  • Dictionaries for several locales can't be packaged with the builds, and must be manually downloaded by right-clicking in a text area and selecting "Add Dictionaries..." from the shortcut menu. New dictionaries are regularly being added to Mozilla Add-ons, so if you don't see the particular dictionary you need, check back later.

  • Access key definitions provided by web pages can now be triggered using Alt+Shift+key on Windows, Ctrl+key on Mac OS X, and Ctrl+Shift+key on Unix.

  • The Session Restore functionality provided in Firefox 2 will restore connections to services which use session cookies to maintain login state such as GMail. It is recommended that users with concerns about the privacy implications of this behavior change the value of browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash to false.

  • The option for "Shrink to fit" has been removed in Firefox 2. If you wish to change this from the value you had set in your previous version of Firefox, change the value of browser.enable_automatic_image_resizing.

  • Software Update will not work if Firefox is installed to a location on your disk to which you do not have write access, since Software Update needs to replace or create files in this location.

  • Some financial institutions use port 563 for secure logins, which results in an error message. If you encounter this error, make sure that network.security.ports.banned.override includes 563 in the comma-separated list of banned network ports to override.

Windows & Windows Vista

  • The Java Console extension that came with Java SE 6.0u1 (J2SE6.0.01) is incompatible with Firefox as reported in Bugzilla. Java should work as expected, but the menu item "Java Console" will not be available in the Tools menu. This issue has been fixed in Java SE 6.0u2 (J2SE6.0.02) and later versions and is available for download from the Java website.

  • Clicking links in some applications (e.g. some instant messaging programs) might not open them in Firefox, even if you have set it as your default browser. To workaround this problem, go to Start -> Default Programs -> Set default programs for this computer, expand custom, select the radio button next to the app you want to set as the system wide default app (e.g. Firefox, etc.), and apply.

  • The Windows Media Player (WMP) plugin is not provided by default in all versions of Windows. If you are having trouble playing Windows Media content in Firefox, download and install the Windows Media Player Plugin for Firefox.

  • Vista Parental Controls are not completely honored. In particular, file downloads do not honor Vista's parental control settings. This will be addressed in an upcoming Firefox release.

  • When migrating from Internet Explorer 7 to Firefox, cookies and saved form history are not imported.

  • Use of the install-global-extension and install-global-theme command line arguments have been restricted to only allow installing add-ons that are on local disks or mapped drives. Installing from a network share directly will no longer succeed.

Mac OS X

  • On OS X 10.5 (Leopard), there are known problems with some media plugins as well as Add-ons that contain binary components.

  • The "Close Other Tabs" action on the shortcut menu of a tab can fail with an error when more than 20 tabs are open.

  • Some users have reported problems viewing Macromedia Flash content on Intel Mac computers. To work around this problem, users can remove or move the PowerPC version of "Flash Player Enabler.plugin from
Internet Fax To Email - Unlimited

Unlimited Faxes, No Fees, Dedicated Phone Number

    Free Website Templates
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    .

  • After installing a new plug-in, Firefox may continue to display information for the older version of the plug-in in about:plugins. If this happens, quit Firefox, delete the "pluginreg.dat" file from your profile folder, and relaunch Firefox.

  • Java does not run on Intel Core processors under Rosetta.

  • There is no Talkback on Intel-based Macs when running natively or under Rosetta. The Apple Crash report program should launch in the event of application crashes.

Linux and Unix

  • If Firefox is installed to a location with spaces in the path, it may not be able to set itself as default browser and may keep prompting at startup. The work around is to install into a path without spaces.

  • GNOME integration does not work properly with Fedora Core 3. Users of Fedora Core 3 will need to download and install linc-1.0.3-3.1.i386.rpm. After installing the RPM, perform the following command in the directory in which you installed Firefox (you will need write permission):

    touch .autoreg

The next time you start Firefox, GNOME integration should be functional.

Troubleshooting

  • Poorly designed or incompatible extensions can cause problems with your browser, including make it crash, slow down page display, etc. If you encounter strange problems relating to parts of the browser no longer working, the browser not starting, windows with strange or distorted appearance, degraded performance, etc, you may be suffering from Extension or Theme trouble. Restart the browser in Safe Mode. On Windows, start using the "Safe Mode" shortcut created in your Start menu or by running firefox.exe -safe-mode. On Linux, start with ./firefox -safe-mode and on Mac OS X, run:

    cd /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/

    ./firefox-bin -safe-mode

When started in Safe Mode all extensions are disabled and the Default theme is used. Disable the Extension/Theme that is causing trouble and then start normally.

  • If you uninstall an extension that is installed with your user profile (i.e. you installed it from a Web page) and then wish to install it for all user profiles using the -install-global-extension command line flag, you must restart the browser once to cleanse the profile extensions datasource of traces of that extension before installing with the switch. If you do not do this you may end up with a jammed entry in the Extensions list and will be unable to install the extension globally.

  • If you encounter strange problems relating to bookmarks, downloads, window placement, toolbars, history, or other settings, it is recommended that you try creating a new profile and attempting to reproduce the problem before filing bugs. Create a new profile by running Firefox with the -P command line argument, choose the "Manage Profiles" button and then choose "Create Profile...". Migrate your settings files (Bookmarks, Saved Passwords, etc) over one by one, checking each time to see if the problems resurface. If you do find a particular profile data file is causing a problem, file a bug and attach the file.

Which One? Take Two Apple TV or UNBOX Amazon

Apple TV and Take Two

I like the idea of Take Two and its integration with the Apple TV appliance, but then again using Tivo to Unbox is also a nice feature. Since both movie download services are set to go head to head for consumer spending in 2008, we will have to see what shakes out.

Take 2 – Apples new movie download service will be shipped out as part of the new Apple TV units as well as a downloadable client for PC and Mac users. With promises of over 100 titles and more to be added quickly it could make the Apple TV the video appliance everyone wants to own. Again I think that it’s going to depend on what price points Apple, The Movie and TV industry try to set for a digital copy. It’s also been stated that if you only use the Apple TV appliance and not the PC or Mac program to download the media, your media files will be stuck on the Apple TV appliance.

Apple Take Two Media Encoding: MP4

Unbox – Now Unbox right now is limited to the United States, the user billing page doesn’t accept a postal code as instructed and the provinces are missing from the drop down. I’m sure that if it takes off and to compete with Take Two, Unbox will roll out to the rest of the Amazon locations by the end of the year if not sooner.

Unbox, uses the WMV(Windows Media Video) file format and comes with Tivo Support.

So, what do you use, I guess it depends on $$, which is cheaper. What devices you own.

You can always convert from mp4 to dvd or wmv to dvd with video converters.

Apple TV with Take 2, will stream the video from any PC or Mac Video source, so it does make it appealing. Maybe when my current stack of DVD-r and my DIVx player breaks, I’ll look into these two options further.

Is it a Ipod or a Iphone - Macworld 2008 Update

IPOD TOUCH GETS SAME FEATURES AS IPHONE - But no phone!

Steve Jobs has announced that all ipod touch units will be getting software os that resembles the iphone os. Ipod Touch applications will include eMail, Maps,Stocks, Notes and Weather to it's application list.

With all new iPod Touch units shipping with the new upgrade, current iPod Touch owners will need to shell out $20US on iTunes to download the upgrade.

Sadly, more applications mean that you're almost non-exitstant hard drive will have enough space free to install the upgrade. - my only peeve with the touch is hard drive size!

Jobs Keynote wears THIN! Macworld Update

I guess with a Macworld 2007 ( Iphone Reveal) nothing was going to show a wow factor! So far it seems that this years macworld won't be making any people rush out to get the must have mac gadget of macworld 2008.

Unless something else is in the mix, looks like a super thin notebook and backup device will be this shows headliners.

For all the iphone users, you'll be getting a OS upgrade!

Other than that "Yawn" maybe next year we will see something cool again.

Iphone Malware. Must read for hacked Iphone Users

Site Resource: http://tech.yahoo.com/news/cmp/205601608

If you have a hacked - UNLOCKED Iphone. Please read this bulletin, it looks like even the smart phones now that they have wifi and browser capabilities are targets for SPYWARE and MALWARE. I've never understood the hacker community when it came to attacking peoples computers, phones.. etc... But I guess a bunch of 12 year olds had nothing better to do.

It's in the form of an update, do not download the 1.1.3 upload installer it is a virus. Make sure that any firmware upgrades you get, are directly from apple. Yes apple did have a bad upgrade previously that did toast some iphone that had been unlocked, but it also toasted normal iphones as well.

Warner Bros, Puts nail in Toshiba HD-DVD coffin!

The International Consumer Electronics Show turns out to be a celebration party for Blu-ray, the high-definition format that Sony Corporation backed, and the funeral for rival movie-disc technology HD-DVD by Toshiba Corp.

On Friday Warner Bros. Entertainment, became the last major studio to put out movies in both formats.

It announced it was ditching HD DVD and from May on, would only publish on Blu-ray and traditional DVD.

The decision puts a strong majority of the major studios, five vs two, in the Blu-ray format.

Looks like SONY lost the beta-max war, but will win it's BlueRay campaign.

Iphone and Ipod Touch, Use the same video format and settings.

Iphone and Ipod Touch use the same video format settings.

Video Specs:

H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second.
H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per second.
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second

Audio Specs:

Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

If you try to use the MP4 videos that you converted for your IPOD classic or an other device, the video will probably be shown on half the viewing area with green pixel ghosting on the other half. Re-Use! Or just get it! Ipod Converter

Can I use a converter I already have to Convert MP4 files for my IPOD?

The answer is yes, if you already own a MP4 Converter program, and want to convert the video. You'll need to make sure you get the Video and Audio Codecs and convert the video using the proper resolution and fps for your IPOD

Most Ipods use a max res of 600x480 with 30 frames per second (fps), others use 320x240. You will need to check the hardward specifications for the model you own.

The codecs you need will also depend on the specifications.

Audio - AAC (Apple Audio Compression) Codec is needed for Audio.
Video - Quicktime 7 H.264 video codec, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second.

Google

You can install both codecs with the Quicktime 7 installation, or search google for the stand alone codec installations of both.

You will need to specify in the advanced settings of your MP4 converted the Audio,Video Codecs to use, plus the resolution and fps to be able to create a IPOD playable video file.

If you don't own an IPOD converter. We recommend the CUCUSoft's Video Conversion Bundle, it will allow you to rip DVD to IPOD files and AVI,MPG to IPOD with one-click operation.
