An iPhone 3G in every pocket!

The new iPhone 3G s is about to be released into the market place, and could very well end up the phone of choice, in a sea of choices. With the new AT&T 2 year contract, you'll need $99 upfront for the hardware. Plus of course the phone and data package. Now here's the kick in the pants for all you 3G owners. You can upgrade your phone, but at a cost. The upgrade price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB). Ouch. You paid what for the 3G in the first place.. and you get a new 2 year contract to boot! Ask yourself. Is the Voice control, video features and up to 2x faster speeds worth that hit to your pocket book.

Available June 19th.

Oh and MMS support coming to AT&T later this year.

What do you mean, that itunes song isn't 99 cents

So the economic change is upon us, and our music loving source the ipod and it's market place iTunes, has decided to try and dip a little deeper into our pockets. So will you buy that iTunes song for a $1.29, that the other day was worth .99 cents.

Its not all bad, the new pricing system, comes in a multi-tier approach. The 1st tier pricing, the stuff no one wants, will be priced at .69 and I guess you might find a bargain. The middle tier. The original .99 price tag will cover the generally still marketable product. The Hot n New, the just out and the extremely must have stuff, will be slapped a 1.29 price, a slap in the face to all you iPod hugging audiophiles. Ok...

I guess some of you will hit the internet highway in search of a ripper, to rip your content. Good for you! You go buy that CD and waste the money on songs you don't want, or maybe you will log in to your favorite P2P program and steal away a few songs.

What ever you do, show Apple that trying to gouge our pockets is a sign, they don't care about your financial situation. Aren't we in a technical depression? A global recession!

This really isn't news! But it was fun to rag about.

What's new at the Apple Store! Tuesday Update

Apple Store
Yes, The Apple Store Update included the new iMac, Mac Pro and Mac Mini.

The new Mac mini, is just like the leaked photos that surfaced on the net the past few weeks. It comes with a starting $599US price tag, UK$499 is quite a bit higher.

The configurations include:

120GB ($599) or 320GB ($799) models
2.0GHz intel Core 2 Duo
1GB (120GB) or 2GB (320GB) - DDR3 SDRAM (supports up to 4GB)
8x SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 128MB (120GB) or 256MB (320 GB) memory
Ports, One FireWire 800, five USB 2.0, Mini-DVI output, Mini Display

Built in Audio speakers
10/100/1000Base-T (Gigabit) networking
AirPort Extereme Wi-Fi (802.11n)
Bluetooth 2.1

Now the best price for an entry level mac, has to be the new iMac.

It's config is almost exactly the 320GB mac mini config, it's $1199.

Mac Mini + Cheaper Monitor will cost you around $1500-$1600US, here is the math.

Mac Mini 320GB = $799
Mac 24inch Flat Panel = $899
Total cost = $1698

So if your are looking for low cost, best deal the new iMac 20 inch will be your best bet. It makes a great addition to any family workspace or entertainment area.

Safari 4 Beta available! Acid3 Test scores.

If you want to believe Apple's Tag line that it's the worlds best browser, you'll have to see for yourself and take a test drive with the new Safari offering. Our tests have concluded that the browser and rendering performance of Beta 4 may be some of best browser performance we have seen, and may take Safari to a larger market share for sure.

Acid3 Test Comparisons:

Firefox 3.0.5
Opera 9.63
Google Chrome 1.0.154.48

As you can see, Safari 4 scores 100/100 on the acid3 test.
Opera is a close second at 85/100 and Firefox and Chrome in behind.
This compared to a 12/100 for I.E.6, which has to be the most used, most hated browser on the planet! It is fantastic news for the web development community. Hopefully all browsers will eventually score a 100/100 and give standards to web development environments

Apple's Mission to Jail iPhone Breakers! Crackulous and Pwned beware.

You have to love CNN, Story coverage today, is breaking news that Apple would love to throw you into the slammer, for jail-breaking you iPhone.

Now, as much as Apple believes they have the right, the fact is ownership is 9 tenths of the law. If you bought it you own it. If you are paying a monthly fee to a carrier then you are paying for it! The phone is yours, if you want to throw it in the garbage or run it over with your car, it's your choice. So messing with an OS you've paid for, is also your choice. Just don't ask for any hardware support or manufacturer warranty if you brick your iPhone.

Now here is what is not legal, the cracking of applications, providing hacks to allow users to use purchased software. Also in the U.S. yes it is illegal to download such applications and install them on your iPhone. It's the same issue about breaching the Millennium Copyright Protection Act, that the MPAA has been screaming about for years.

Just like loading an illegally downloaded MP3, or an MP4. Getting applications from sites like Hackulous, Appulous, Crackulous and so on, might one day land you in legal hot-water. Or maybe Apple will brick your iPhone the next time you connect it to iTunes, and then mail you out a violation fine.

Edit: Feb 19 2009.

Looks like Skype and Mozilla jumped into trash Apples locking blocking rules on loading what you want on hardware you've purchased and have filed their own sets of papers in support of a more open handset. As the Yahoo Tech article reports... they both have something to gain with a more jail-broken handset operating system. Browser choice and IP WiFi calling.. hmmm.

Pink Macbook Air? Rumor or Real!

So is this pinkness a reality, in the coming weeks it's expected that Apple is launching the Macbook Air in PINK glory, tied to the cancer society and breast cancer awareness. Well that is the rumor, a go forth and spread it, it actually would be a great cause. Over-all, it's not out of the question as Apple and it's RED campaign was launched to benefit AIDS research and awareness in africa. So are all the Valley Girls going to be toting this pick AIR soon? Maybe, Maybe not!

What will happen now that Apple is at 20,000 and Microsoft wants in!

Well, it's obvious, don't make it look like an apple, Sound like an apple or taste like an apple, and you might avoid a law suit. It's "APPLE'S" and Oranges in this case, and the MS App store will of course, have no iPhone or iTouch applications but will carry everything for everyone else, well that's my guess! What does the iTunes store care anyway, they have 20,000 apps, lots of fart noises and gag apps to satisfy almost every kid at heart!

Oh and what will android do! well, probably force all the Google apps down on you!!

Pirated iWork infected with Trojan. Nothing like iWarez! and iAdware oh and iBugs!

I recently checkout an Engadget story, about the Pirated iWork download. Which infected a reported 20,000 Macs.

First off - I’m guessing from the commentary on the post, the Mac users at engadget have a little issue with under standing what a virus is. What Trojan is, and what malware and adware are! Probably because up to now, the lower amount of user base in the Apple camp made it less of a target, for people trying to make money off you.

So.. What is a Trojan.. Wiki says:
In the context of computing and software, a Trojan horse, also known as a trojan, is a form of malware that appears to perform a desirable function but in fact performs undisclosed malicious functions that allow unauthorized access to the host machine. As such, a computer worm or virus may also be classed as a Trojan horse if they display these characteristics.

Is it a Virus. Is it Adware. Is it Malware… Well all the above could be true.

Since the term is coined of the battle of Troy, and the Trojan horse was used as a gift to infiltrate the enemy camp… The term Trojan, is simply that. A vessel to transport a piece of code to do something you are unaware of, ie. Infect you with a virus. Install Malware or Adware on your machine. In this case. The iWork Trojan was to install OSX.Trojan.iServices.A on your machine. To enable remote access to the people that wrote the service.

Now most of you have a great understanding of Parallels or other such virtualization software, if you are going to try a pirated copy of something. Try it on your test OS first. Make sure no new services are running, and so on. Or just go buy a copy.

How Do I Say I Love You! A NANO - Apple's v-day is in gear.

Apple Store
It didn't take the folks at Apple long to switch gears from Holiday shopping promotions, to the How many ways do I love you, let me count the nano's, promotions. Well after a small break ( MacWorld 2009 ) and yes that's all I'm going to comment on a very disappointing show, in my opinion. It's like Microsoft holding an event for Office 2010 and eveyone getting excited.. The Valentines day deals are starting to pop up at the Apple Store. Nothing says "loving" like it printed on the back of an iPod Nano.

500 million app downloads for iPhone - Really?

Ok, so the iTunes app store has had 500 million app downloads so far! But does it really mean anything, considering that the Top app in iTunes for the iPhone and the iPod Touch is iFart, a completely useless application, that sends gaseous sounds out it's speakers. It would be more impressive if Apple promoted the iTunes app store with a press release that read, 400 million iFart downloads, and 100 million meaningful application downloads so far. Tongue in cheek, the App store has enable developers the distribution platform to reach it's users. Hopefully 2009 brings 500 Million ground breaking applications this year, oh and a iFart version 3.0.

The first week of Jan 2009, What will it bring? iPhone Nano -OK I'm Bored.

Ok.. I'm sleep deprived, that I know! it's Jan. The kids schedules are all messed up due to the holiday bussel and hussel. Working on 4 hours a sleep a night, I'm hoping that Mac World 2009 is going to bring a little joy to my other wise busy life right now.

The rumors, well it doesn't take a big search to find them.. and since my little blog, means nothing to anyone.. It's probably not going to be the first time you hear that a iPhone Nano is on it's way.

Now I ask my self this, why do I want a iPhone nano.. I don't!  What is the niche for such a gadget.

Well I'm guessing it's going to be a purse phone, for the girly girls that are heading out for a night on the town.  They better ship it in HOT pink. It's the only color I see being a hit out on the market.

Ok, Maybe the iphone Nano, might hit a different price point.. iPay as you go... Maybe.

Or, Maybe the iPhone Nano - $99.98 4GB available at Walmart.

Ok - I'm bored already.  I'm sure every pre-schooler is counting thier pennies right now!

The new iPod Touch - YAWN

Apple Store
Ok, the iPod Touch is a great little PMP and has a bunch of bonuses. For people who don't own one, or an iPhone. The updated iPod Touch's new features are a bonus. The fact is, they slapped on the shinney backing the old iPhone used, they added some volume controls to the side, and updated the firmware and software to enable the new software services, like the game apps and other software found in the iTunes app library. So if you already own one, you probably are not running out to grab the updated model. If you don't have one, the iPod Touches new release gives you the same solid cool PMP only apple could provide you.

Now the other updates include case, color and software updates to almost all the older generation iPods and nanos.

iPhone 3G 1st weekend round-up

iPhone 3G Blues:
The first weekend of iPhone sales now on the books, and numbers to probably be released, to push more global hype coming soon, what was the launch story! With rumors and conjured stories and false statements galore, what happened, a total system melt down with the iTunes crashing due to, too many 1.0 phones activating and the activation of the 3G during the early hours of 3g-day. Who every thought releasing the iPhone 2.0 software update the same day, probably should re-think their career path and MobileMe is more like not mobile at all right now. As well hopefully we won't see any new iPhone unboxing surfacing on Youtube, the iFixit team did a fantastic job being first.

Did Apple create a global shortage and false sell-out hysteria? It doesn't really matter to us, we have a wait and see approach to buying any new hand-helds or technology equipment. We read the reviews and buyers guides and make sure that our hard earn money makes the best possible purchase it can make.

1st weekend top stories:
Apple's iPhone activation server problems (updated 2x)" ZDNet Blogs: The Apple Core
"'iPocalypse' now: The perils of event marketing" Fortune: Apple 2.0
"Plenty of iPhones at Apple stores on Day 2" Orange County Register
"Apple Bungles its iPhone 3G Launch" Time
"MobileMe Fails to Launch" TidBITS

The iPhone 3G has it's hits and misses, review after review states pro's and con's. It's fairly simple, if you own a 1.0 phone, don't upgrade it now unless you want to get off the EDGE network and surf using 3G on a hefty data package. If you don't own an iPhone and want an iPod, a phone, fantastic wifi and 3G mobile browsing check it out at an Apple Store near you.
With sales above 1 million in the first weekend Apple has announced, read the press release. Coupled with approx 10 million 2.0 downloads. The iHype continues........

iTunes, Apple TV - Buy now feature.

With Apple gaining seller rights to new release at the same time as DVD release dates; it's no wonder that it quietly added the "buy now" feature in Apple TV devices. Why would someone want to buy a movie for a proprietary set-top-box? I get the detachment to physical media. For one, it's a pain to store! Shelves lined with cases, mostly just collecting dust. Apple TV rental window made it easy to rent and watch movies with you Apple TV device, now you can buy and store them on the device. Let's hope they keep a purchase record in iTunes or allow a Time Capsule backup to safe gaurd your purchased media!

With Apple using a time-based DRM (digital right management) for rental video, how will they handle the digital content they sell you? Probably with a digital iTunes certificate that will allow you to transfer to your iPod or iPhone. Don't expect to be able to rip any DVD's. I'm sure you'll find a way to do the MP4 to DVD conversion and strip the DRM.

The Canadian iPhone commeth!

[Press Release] TORONTO, April 29 /CNW/ - Ted Rogers, President and Chief ExecutiveOfficer of Rogers Communications Inc. today issued the following statement: We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring theiPhone to Canada later this year. We can't tell you any more about it rightnow, but stay tuned.

So it looks like the Canadians will be getting the iPhone in the maybe not too distant future. Did Rogers and Apple decide to allow Rogers to apply the logo to the iPhone? Will the data rate transmission unlimited package be worked out to allow the iPhone usage? Will the iPhone be subsidized to an affordable rate? It will be interesting to see! More questions than answers right now, but looks like the Apple iPhone is going north of the US border.

Would you buy a Mac Clone to save $50 odd dollars?

Mac Clone? Yah or Nah!

Psystar recently came onto the tech scene, boasting a low cost open operating system. The system which can run OS x has a price point of $399. Now you can have Leopard per-loaded onto the system for an additional $155. My question to the masses is, if you can pick up a Mac-mini for $599, would you buy a system that may or may not be fully compatible. Yes Psystar is stating it is, but the fact is that Mac Clones where sent packing years ago, to make damb sure that the Mac's name was built on reliable and sexy hardward! Sorry Psystar is not!

iTunes Unlimited - Why not?

Who cares about eMusic, really!

iTunes needs to do something! The biggest issue with online downloading is the pricing that is eating at every single music and movie lovers back pocket. iTunes doesn't need to go to a subscription or unlimited plan. eMusics threat that a law suit is appearant is a laugh. iTunes could bundle a gift card to itunes with each new purchase, slash prices to downloads and work with music and movie companies to reduce prices.

The way iTunes,Amazon,Netflix and Zip prices are going, they are probably losing more money to online file sharing than price cutting would cost them.

Let's see a little online file downloading price war! It's about time.

Iphone oh! Iphone be my Andriod!

So the iPhone may need to hurry up on its SDK release. Google has just shown off Google Andriod Open Source. It’s promising to provide an open SDK for phone software development. This is exactly what iPhone developers have been chomping at the bit for over a year.

When the development community enquired and pleaded, Apple (AAPL) responded with Safari based development, screams of this isn’t good enough have been heard and it looks like we are getting closer to an actual SDK.
Now with development already started in the Android camp with phones coming, maybe in Q3/Q4 2008. What killer application will they have! Will the iPhone developers be ready in time, seeing they haven’t got their hands on the SDK?

Looks like a price drop is coming to sell more iPhones soon too! The more people on board isn’t it suppose to be easier to sink the ship!

Mac release Q1 08 stats, where are the iPhones?

When the AAPL – Apple Investors heard the news on the stats released on sales the biggest question was what happen to all the iPhones that Apple reported sold. It seems that AT&T announced that 2 million of the 4 that apple reported as sales where activated on the network. The question is? Did the other 2 million get bought to be unlocked to work on non AT&T Carriers?

Now it’s more likely that a large amount of iPhones are sitting in inventory shelves right now as the estimates are that only 20% of buyers have the intention to unlock the phone. What is worrisome is that the announcement of the 3G iPhone later this year could create a sell off on current iPhone inventory stock.

I guess this is really only a concern to the shareholders! Actually, what this means is that you’ll probably be able to find amazing deals of current iPhone technology later this year as the 3G model starts to ship. Great for the consumer! Not to mention the eBay resellers!

Thin is in! Will Apple set the new laptop trend again?

APPLE AIR - THIN

Apple has be setting design standards with innovative designs for decades, many say that the removal of the floppy drive was initiated by Apples removal of the drive around 1999 when the iBook came out. Over the past few years companies have been scrambling to catch up, let’s look at Dell. This year they have entered into the mass-market chains (Walmart, Best-Buy, Staples, etc.). Their whole campaign and designs are around personalization. Who does that sound like?

Now if you realize that Apple designs are about pushing the envelope (Mind the pun) then Thin is in! With the announcement of the Apple Air, a couple of design standards will need to be re-thought. The Air isn’t just Thin! Light! And about style! What will probably become standard in the next couple of years in all laptop designs; will be the incorporation of a backlit keyboard. Also the removal of the DVD drive to an external resource. It’s also believed that the AIR (Apple naming convention for the wireless components i.e. AIRPORT), is the reason the DVD drive is external, and the move to a large use in Wifi technology is ahead.

Okay, the Apple AIR will probably not sell a huge amount of units in the next few months, but it is attractive as an option for students and business people looking for the compact laptop.

Amazon pre-sales state the AIR will ship around Feb. 1. 2008, and you can already pre-order with them or at the Apple store.

The Ipod is less traveled than ever before.

It seems that more and more people tend to leave their ipod docked into a clock radio (Philis Clock Radio with iPod Dock (AJ300D) or a bookshelf radio with a built in dock (Sony iPod Dock (ICFC1IPWHT)). Why? I guess it’s that it’s the perfect storage device for all you’re media. With the Sync being installed in the new automobiles for 2008 it shows you that the MP3 Player is how the majority of people want to listen to their music collection.

The systems that house the iPod range from low end market to high end with companies like BOSE, an their Sound Dock (43091) for as low as $399 and Harman Kardon Go & Play.

The ipod isn’t just for the inside of jacket pocket anymore!

We will probably see kitchen cabinet radio mounts for the ipod, or maybe a ipod wifi dock that streams to wifi speakers. As you walk into your house you drop your ipod into a wifi cradle, and now can access it anywhere you have your remote speakers.

Putting a DVD onto an Ipod or other Digital Players.

Making a digital copy and watching it on your Ipod or other types of players is fairly simple. What you need is a software package that by-passes the DVDs disc encryption, then takes the VOB files of the movie and converts it to the correct format.

Now bypassing DRM (Digital Rights Management) and Copy Protection on DVD dics may not be legal in your country. If you own the DVD and you are making a copy to play on your device then in some countries this is legal.

Now each digital media player uses a certain type of audio video codecs to encode the file so it’s playable on its video playing software.

Apple Ipod media players use a encoding called a MP4. The MP4 format can be encoded using the MP4 encoding or for the Ipod the H.264 Quicktime video codec with the Apple Audio codec (AAC).

The Zune player uses the WMV (Windows Media) format and uses the WMA(Windows Audio codec) for sound.

Blackberry Video uses the MP4 encoding, Divx 4 encoding, Divx5,6 files are currently not supported.

When you’re looking to convert from DVD to a type of player, it’s important that the software you use goes from VOB to the correct codec types. If a file is coded in the incorrect format, most likely your player will not be able to read the file correctly.

Now each video media player may have a different way of loading the files to the players, both blackberry and zune can be accessed by the different OS file manages as a USB type drive.

The Ipod and Iphones are a different story, these players use Apple’s (Mac) file systems and you’ll need to use a “loading software” (Itunes) to sync the files onto the devices. Fairly easy to do, all you do is import the MP4 file to your Itunes software. Then sync up your device.

The best advice I can give is check your hardware specs, most players play resolutions of 320x240, up to 30 frames per second (fps)
